The Worst Event of 2008

The Global Economic meltdown was by far the worst thing to have happened in 2008(globally speaking). Markets crashed, jobs were lost and everyone lived in fear as a subprime mortagage crisis in the US snowballed into the greatest economic disaster since the Great Depression. On the bright side, careless, greedy honchos have got a nice kick in the butt and once the crisis is over, share prices might just settle at more realistic levels.

Worst Bollywood films of 2008

After nearly a year, I return to compile a list of the most sorry films released from Bollywood in 2008. These include big budget disasters and small films which (rightfully) sunk without a trace. Hope you enjoy the thrashing I give.
1. Wafaa- Rajesh Khanna's comeback movie stank as far as box office performance and critic's response go. Not being able to get an opening above 5%, this film hasn't even been screened in the Delhi multiplexes. I saw some of its clips on 'Face the Review' on Zoom and was revulsed. A complete no-no by every standard.
2. Dhoom Dhadakka- A cheapskate film that I doubt anyone remembers. This film follows the antics of a don who must pass his property on to his nephew, who he hasn't met in years. A couple of imposters show up at the nephews house and... I don't know the rest and don't even wanna know. (remember, I've only read the reviews and box office reports)
3. Deshdrohi- This film made a mockery out of the MNS controversy in Maharashtra. A joke in terms of screenplay, direction, and performances. Poor KRK ... who am I kidding, he sucks!(I could figure that he was lame by watching the trailers)
4. Jimmy- The disastrous debut of Mithun Chakraborty's son Mimoh, who now doesn't figure in the news. This film is a screwed-up rehash of the films of the '80s where the guy is the 'hero' of town, and a DJ, and someone who goes to jail and escapes, seeking vengeance. How can you expect any guy to a good job in such a bad film?
5. Haal-e-Dil- Another disastrous debut of 3 actors, namely- Nakul Mehta, Adhyayan Suman(Shekhar Suman's son, who has acted in the hit Raaz-The Mystery Continues and disowned this film) and Amita Pathak. It follows a hackneyed love triangle about which I have heard nothing remotely pleasing. Even the songs weren't spared (Though personally, I found them okay)
6. Love Story 2050- A much-hyped washout, this is yet another disastrous debut of poor newbie Harman Baweja (this time, I really sympathise with him). Despite marking Indian cinema's coming of age in special effects, a cliched and poorly written script brought it down. Whatever effort Harman put in was dismissed by calling him a Hrithik Roshan copycat (he got rid of that tag in Victory, which, sadly, has failed as well)
7. Drona- A wierd superhero fick that received flak from all sides. This poorly written film marks the story of Aditya (Abhishek Bachchan) who discovers that he's a Drona (superhero) and must stop the evil Ritz (Kay Kay Menon) from drinking amrit and becoming immortal with the help of Sonia (Priyanka Chopra). Abhishek Bachchan's dull performance was panned along with everything else (except for the special effects, of course).
8. Yuvvraaj- Subhash Ghai's latest potboiler turned out to be a boring rehash of his other 'three brothers' tales, with ridiculously outdated elements in the script. Despite the impressive sets, music, and performances, this film bombed at the box office.
9. Kidnap- Sanjay Gadhvi's latest film may have beaten Drona at the box office, but that's all it acheived. Only Imran Khan's performance could provide some consolation for the amateurishly written, dull script.
10. Tashan- An extremely brainless and stupid film, this is the only one in the list that I have watched (on a pirated DVD). Though I liked the music, the performances, and even some of the gags, I fully empathise with, and respect the opinion of, those who didn't like the film. Recommended only if you enjoy extremely silly jokes, or if you want to have a laugh at Yash Raj Films (like I did).
